Breast implants have improved tremendously in the 50 years they've been in use,  and most especially for women seeking larger, fuller breasts. One of the biggest improvements is the variety of options you now have in selecting the breast implant that is right for your breast augmentation. You can select the fill material for your breast implants as well as the size of your breast implants. These two options allow you to highly customize your breast augmentation so that it is right for your body and meets your aesthetic goals.

This page gives some basic information about types of breast implants, but the best way to learn which implant is best for you is in a consultation with board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Joseph Fata. To talk to Dr. Fata today, please call or email Renaissance Plastic Surgery

Breast Implant Options

In selecting the best breast implant for your breast augmentation procedure, there are several important decisions to make. You can select your:

  • Breast implant size
  • Breast implant fill type
  • Breast implant shape

You can begin to consider these options now. Dr. Fata will go over these options and help you make a final decision during your consultation.

Breast Implant Size

When you are considering breast augmentation, you should focus on defining your cosmetic goals. If your breasts have changed size over time (such as during pregnancy or with weight gain or loss), think about the time you were happiest with your breast size. You can also consider clothes that you would like to be able to feel comfortable in after your breast augmentation. You can bring in pictures of women who have a breast size you think is attractive.

These can all serve as a starting place for your discussion with Dr. Fata, who will help you find the right breast implant size to meet your cosmetic goals. Dr. Fata believes that choosing the right breast implant size is one of the most important decisions you will make, and one of the goals of your consultation is to find the right size for you.

Dr. Fata and his patient coordinator, Donette, will assist you in a “sizing session”, in which you will wear a bra with different size real breast implants to see how you will really look. Through his years of experience, Dr. Fata has found the “sizing session” to be the most effective way to give women the size breast implants that will make them happy.

By the end of your consultation, you will either know the exact size breast implant you want or you will have it narrowed down and you can make a final decision during your pre-operative visit.

Breast Implant Fill Type

There are currently two types of breast implants available for breast augmentation in the United States: silicone gel breast implants and saline breast implants. Silicone gel implants are filled with a cohesive form of silicone. They look and feel more natural than saline breast implants--which are filled with salt water--and since their re-introduction in 2006, they have become the preferred choice for most women. They are slightly more expensive than saline breast implants, but most women consider the expense justified by the improved cosmetic results. Saline breast implants have the advantage of being able to adjust the final volume during surgery, which may be helpful for women with noticeable asymmetry.

Breast Implant Shape

Breast implants can be either round or anatomically shaped. Round implants are used in almost all breast augmentation procedures. Anatomical implants were designed to give more natural-looking results primarily for breast reconstruction, but they have the problem of rotating in the breast pocket, which can create a very unusual appearance.

The reality is that a natural breast is round and changes into a more “teardrop”, or anatomic shape, when you are upright because of gravity. Fortunately, that is exactly what a round breast implant does: it is round when you are lying down and “teardrop” shaped when you sit or stand for the best simulation of a natural breast. In most patients, Dr. Fata recommends a round breast implant shape because of these advantages.

Round implants also come in a variety of profiles: moderate, moderate-plus, and high profile. Adjusting the profile of the breast implant allows you to get the right balance of breast volume and projection to get a size and shape of breasts that meet your cosmetic goals and match your body proportions. The best and most natural looking results are usually achieved with moderate-plus profile breast implants.
